Fashion Feng Shui

As we arrive upon cappuccino weather, some of us (myself included) are in a bit of denial. It’s a season of mixed messages — shorts with sweaters, high boots with skirts, and the dilemma of whether or not to put on some tights. Kudos to Michelle for hanging on to the illusion of summertime.

Fashion Feng Shui

Michelle, Barista So it seems Michelle may have listened to one too many Fleetwood Mac albums as a child, and that’s always a good thing. With her cropped elephant print tunic and mom jeans cut to shorts, add unruly long blonde locks and some more jewelry and the Stevie Nicks transformation would be complete. Regardless, cropped tops and high-waisted bottoms easily transform into the upcoming cooler months.

So what inspires you the most when it comes to your aesthetic? I dunno. I guess I’m really into stones and spirituality, like healing and stuff. I like to feel peaceful in my clothes like I’m emitting certain auras. I dunno, that sounds really stupid but I guess I mean a sort of feng shui. That, and I’m really into different cultures.

Yeah, I was going to ask you about the print you’re wearing and the big jewelry — which would be categorized as, and I hate using this word describing fashion, “ethnic.”
I mean, I really like world music. And I really like gypsy culture and stuff like that, so that’s a recurring theme in my wardrobe. I do wear a lot of prints… I mean a tremendous amount of prints. A lot of stripes too. I’m kinda crazy because I’ll do stripes and flowers at the same time. I like to mix and match patterns a lot.

Where are you from?
Originally, New Jersey but I’ve lived in Bushwick for the past two years… working here at the Wyckoff Starr.

Do you think there are recurring patterns in the way people dress in Bushwick?
Well, working here I notice a lot of really interesting styles and I don’t really think anyone dresses the same here. There are similar details and stuff like that but for the most part, usually, everyone adds their own flair to their clothes.

Would you describe your look as girly?
It’s more functional than anything, I guess. I do wear a lot of dresses but I think I tend to wear an even amount of everything — pants, shorts, skirts, etc. I don’t like to limit myself, they’re all like my costumes. I don’t discriminate against clothing, I will wear just about anything.
