"There were people who actually grabbed their children and ran away. They said I was working with the devil," said Michaels, a feng shui consultant who moved to the Peoria area from St. Louis a couple years ago. Feng shui (pronounced "fuhng shway") is an ancient Chinese art and philosophy that helps create harmony and balance in our surroundings.

Translated literally, it means wind and water. Its earliest practitioners observed that physical objects and their orientation seem to effect the flow of energy or chi (pronounced "chee"). At its core, it's about using all five elements - wood, earth, metal, fire and water - to aid the flow of chi.

Still, the idea that home decor can influence your career, health and even relationships is often met with skepticism or worse, Michaels says, until she tells people that Donald Trump uses it. That, and the fact that it's not a religion.

"Trump's famous quote is, 'I don't know how it works. I just know that it works,' " says Michaels, adding that is exactly how many of her clients feel. They don't know why arranging their furniture a certain way makes them happier, they just know that it does.

Feng Shui isn’t the a magic wand with a ‘cure all’ aura. It isn’t even associated with a religion. Yet it lures Hong Kongers into following it. It’s inscrutable power has its origins way back to 6000 years in ancient Chinese art and science. It is vigilance, combination of math, science, geology, and intuition, striking a perfect balance of energies or the qi for a peace and accord.

Hong Kongers are so reliant on Feng Shui that every important decision in their life, be it a new house, new furniture, marriage or even placing a doormat is taken after guidance from their Feng Shui connoisseurs. It’s not you who saves a relationship. Apparently, it Feng Shui!

The first PRC’s signature building in Hong Kong created a furor because Chinese born American architect I.M.Pei designed the building with sharp edges. This was believed to bring in negative energy as they looked like daggers ready to stab. Panic struck the American Consulate with people going berserk and placing hexagonal mirrors as an antidote to the supposed bad fortune.

Homes in the Valley are on the market 74 days on average and sellers will do almost anything to get them sold. Some are turning to the ancient art of Feng Shui for help getting a sale.

Lisa Montgomery says she used to get some pretty strange looks.

“Ten years ago they used to look at me like I was much crazier,” Montgomery said. But the Feng Shui team of Lisa Montgomery and Marianne Kilekowskis use Feng Shui to stage homes and get them sold. Today thye’re working on Kim Ritter’s Mesa condo. She’s hoping it works some magic on prospective buyers.

“When they walk in I want them to feel the good energy of the place,” Ritter says. Before, Ritter's condo was lacking accessories and felt stale. Montgomery says it was missing some Chi or good energy flow. Just a few simple changes made a big difference.

“The mirror that we put by the front helps push the engery into the house, the fountain by the door helps create more energy and the plants that we’ve placed around actually help to clear the energy and add more Chi to the condominium,” Montgomery said.

Gluing a gold coin on your front door may help you win a jackpot - a Sydney ex-cop followed this feng shui-inspired trick to win a house worth more than 1.2million dollars at the BoysTown charity lotto. According to Aussie feng shui expert Elizabeth Wiggins, who has placed coins under her front door mat, the man's win was more about the positive mindset he attached to the coin.

"I have coins in my front door, but that doesn't mean they are going to win a million bucks," the Sydney Morning Herald quoted her, as saying. She went on: "Is this part of traditional feng shui? No it's not. "Gold represents wealth, anything that is gold is considered auspicious [by the Chinese], and the coin represents money as well. If he believes that gold coin will give him money, he'll attract that kind of money."

Feng Shui Index - Year of Golden Tiger Expected to Roar

The 16th CLSA Feng Shui Index has been released with a tongue-in-cheek look at what 2010 holds for equities, commodities, property, celebrities, and the zodiac signs in the months ahead. The previous year of the Golden Tiger was in 1950, a year that saw the Dow Jones Index gain significantly and end the year on a high note. However, tiger years are typically times of dramatic changes and upheaval. The year 2010, much like the tiger itself, will be an energetic and powerful time marked by impulsiveness and risk.

Since this is a metal tiger year, gold is forecast to have a great run and break at US$2,000 an ounce. Moreover, the index predicts that all commodities will fair well including silver, copper, zinc and aluminum. Businesses related to wood elements will also do well: pulp and paper, clothing and pharmaceuticals. Fire and earth elements like technology, power, telecoms and property will also have a good run this year but water related sectors will be challenged, posing a threat the for shipping, airlines, logistics, autos and transport industries.

Feng shui brings design harmony to Alexandria home

It was feng shui from concept to completion for interior designer Sherry B. Ways as she guided a young Alexandria couple toward a delightfully harmonious home. Soothing shades of blue, gray, sage and beige flow through the interior, which was designed with the homeowners' energy, intent and lifestyle in mind.

"Feng shui is about creating positive energy, the right chi, within a space," said Ways, a principal with Design Scheme Interiors of Savage, Md. She studied various schools of feng shui and incorporated them, along with other Eastern philosophies, in her approach.

"It was my idea," the wife said. "I had done some research but wanted someone to help us with the layout and flow of the house." Ways began by guiding the couple through an intention ceremony. This process meant entering each room and stating the intention and purpose for the space. They burned sage and chanted -- the wife said her husband, a Navy officer, was skeptical at first.
