Feng Shui in the Kitchen

Posted in : Kitchens Feng Shui

(added few months ago!)

In feng shui the kitchen is where the heart is and it represents nourishment and prosperity so you have good energy (‘chi) in your kitchen, which is very important. Believers in feng shui feel that how you decorate and design your kitchen can influence the prosperity and health of all living in that home.

Feng Shui in the KitchenThe placement of the kitchen is particularly important. It should ideally be at the back of the house and the back or front doors should not open into the kitchen as this affects the ‘chi’ or energy of the kitchen. If the kitchen is in the front of your home and facing a front door this is believed to kill any positive energy from entering into the home and this can bring illness and misfortune to those living in the house. Try hanging some beaded curtains or sheer curtains over the kitchen door.

Some other things to consider when doing your kitchen according to feng shui are: Don’t place the kitchen underneath an upstairs bathroom or facing a toilet as the water and waste will destroy the energy.

Make sure the living room, dining room and kitchen are on the same levels. The shape of the kitchen layout should be rectangular try to avoid having a rounded shaped kitchen. Colors to use in the kitchen according to feng shui are red, yellow and green.

Great Feng Shui Tips For the Kitchen

The kitchen is the most important area of the home when it comes to promoting good health and prosperity. A kitchen with a good feng shui will bring good fortune and good health for the whole family.

The kitchen should be located deep within the house. All sharp objects and the kitchen utensils should be neatly tucked away out of sight in the cabinets, to keep the kitchen uncluttered and airy. When you use your stove, wealth energy is created. Traditional gas stoves are preferred over electronic stoves as they produce real flames. The element of the kitchen is fire.

Feng Shui Kitchen Tips – Oven Placement

A lot of advice is published on the web around where your kitchen should be situated, how a kitchen should be decorated, where your oven should be positioned, the direction your workshops should face and so on. The focal point of the kitchen is the oven which represents fire.

However the majority of the other large items in the kitchen are all water based. Think about the average kitchen. The fire energy from the oven can be overcome with water energy if steps are not taken to provide the oven with some much needed support, leading to jerky and destructive energy in the kitchen and possible fractious relationships between the occupants of the home.

In the same way strength will be gained if the kitchen is in the south east or south areas of the home. If your oven or kitchen is not in one of these directions then you can use colour to provide support. Green is an excellent colour for a kitchen as green represents wood which supports fire whilst taking it’s own energy from water.

Introducing some green kitchen items like utensil jars, biscuit barrels and cups, plates and bowls can work just as well. In our own kitchen which faces south I have a large red and green fruit bowl displayed in one corner to help strengthen the fire element.

If there is really no room between the oven and the sink, fridge or dishwasher then you will need to place the crystals on top of the water based element, or in the case of the sink behind the sink. Feng shui the holiday

Posted in : Feng Shui For Home, General

(added few months ago!)

Interested in adding some holiday glam to your home, and making it feng shui-friendly at the same time? New York-based Debra Duneier, a feng shui practitioner and author of EcoChi: Designing the Human Experience, has a few seasonal suggestions. - Make holiday meals memorable, Duneier suggests, noting that round or oval tables are the best shapes for optimal feng shui dining. "The absence of sharp corners and hard edges helps energy flow freely and gently through the room," she says in a prepared release. "If you do have a rectangular dining table, make sure your guests are not seated too close to the corners, which can cause a feeling of unease during the meal."

Feng shui the holiday

- To enhance your guests' sensory experiences, she says that pine and cinnamon are wonderful choices when entertaining, adding that lavender or lemon can create a calm environment during the holiday rush.

- When it comes to the entrance of your home, Duneier advises that it not be blocked with packages, cartons or bags. "Keep the pathway to your front door uncluttered," she says. "This is where fresh energy and opportunities enter your space and your life."

- As for that side door, Duneier says: "Give it a beauty treatment by planting lush plants or flowers nearby. Make your guests feel as if they are entering your 'castle' no matter which door they enter."- And lastly, says Duneier, who is also a LEED Green associate, unplug those appliances and lights. "Even when your appliances, equipment and lights are turned off, if they are plugged into outlets you still are consuming electricity ... This saves energy and saves you money too."

Seeing Your Home Through ‘Feng Shui’ Eyes

Posted in : Feng Shui For Home

(added few months ago!)

At the foundation of Feng Shui is the belief that everything in our home is alive and talking to us. This may seem like a stretch to many, but stop and think about it; when the first thing you encounter when you enter your home is the unrelenting pile of clutter, how does it make you feel? My sense is – not so great about yourself. And who needs that?( See my article the Anatomy of Clutter)

Seeing Your Home Through ‘Feng Shui’ Eyes

Your home holds information about belief systems that may or may not be serving you. You can train yourself to see them by looking at exactly what is there. By acting on this information, you gain valuable tools for transformation and personal growth.

My client Elinore’s living room walls were filled with large, expensive oil paintings of her husband’s dead relatives. Sort of like the ones you might find in a castle with everyone looking very severe and disapproving.  She hated them but did not have the nerve to tell her husband. He had inherited them and as the only son of a wealthy family, wanted to have the up, but they had a very small home. She had no room to put any of the pictures that she loved. Her space had an important message for her if she was willing to see it.

In Elinore’s case it revealed that she didn’t value herself enough to  have that “courageous conversation” with her husband about not feeling comfortable in her own space. She didn’t feel worthy of asking him for this important thing.  She could have presented him with options; he could put them in his own office or even give them to other  relatives. Because she could not speak up about her own needs, she was consigning herself to live with  the ‘eyes of the disapproving relatives’ eternally following her around the house.

Feng shui goes digital

Posted in : Feng shui colors

(added few months ago!)

Feeling a bit out of luck lately? Maybe it's time to check out the arts of feng shui, which now comes to the PC screen near you. Most feng shui masters use the lunar calendar and the so-called pa kua or bakua numbers to find the best instructions and directions, but one practitioner has begun to rely on a computer program.

The founder of an IT-solutions company has been using software to apply feng shui basics _ to determine energy and rearrange office furniture to attract more customers and increase sales. Thanutporn Kitpanit, a founder of 168 Worldwide IT Solutions Co, said she strongly believes much of her initial success came from good feng shui.

"Good feng shui means creating energy that makes a space feel good, look good and serve its purpose," she said.  Founded in 2006, 168 Worldwide IT Solutions suffered a loss of one million baht after the first year of operation, which involves providing software and applications on quality management and quality control.

The loss surged to five million baht in the second year, Mrs Thanutporn recalled. "I decided to take over the management from my son. The overhaul of the company began in 2008," she said. Mrs Thanutporn started applying basic feng shui rules after learning the art for more than a decade. She used them in the office and surrounding areas to draw luck, wealth and prosperity.

Later, she applied the use of a computer program to calculate Pa Kua numbers, lucky positions and colours, elements and directions for perfect home and office feng shui designs. Pa Kua, an octagon used as a protective symbol, is considered the most important symbol of feng shui.

Feng shui, which means wind and water in Chinese, is a mixture of art and science in use for thousands of years in China and the Far East. Mrs Thanutporn said she applied modern feng shui software to help her take advantage of the power of feng shui, giving her direct access to all the different aspects of the art _ from reshaping life and business fortunes to exploring personalities and relationships.

"We apply feng shui everywhere _ from office and garden designs to choice of colours and the positions of desks. We developed our own excel computer program to determine the best feng shui energy spots and auspicious positions," she said.

"Each corner office and small cubicle can use our digital program to find the best feng shui."Based on her feng shui principles, Mrs Thanutporn's auspicious numbers for this year are 2, 3 and 4 while 7 represents a bad-luck figure. Generally, the all-time lucky numbers are 1, 6 and 8. "Given that 2 is my best luck, I recruited more staff until the headcount reached 22," Mrs Thanutporn said.

"I also put my customers's logos and namecards in auspicious positions to keep them with us," she said with smile. Apart from feng shui, Mrs Thanutporn uses another computer program to find auspicious time and dates for her salespeople to set out to negotiate with big customers or sign important contracts.

Even when she screened job candidates, she uses computer-based feng shui to calculate the dates, time and places of birth and fill them to appropriate positions. Mrs Thanutporn's business namecard also followed the rules of feng shui, which prescribe the size of 2 inches wide and 2.2 inches long.

After applying the feng shui tips, Mrs Thanutporn said the benefits were almost pulpable. She started noticing how the company's sales and profitability improved significantly.

"We broke even in 2009 after applying feng shui principles for one year," she said. "The company made a profit of 4 million baht on sales revenue of 23 million baht last year."Mrs Thanutporn said the company expects to see 50 million baht in revenue this year, but declined to elaborate on the profit figure.

The company aims to list on the Stock Exchange of Thailand in a near future, with the planned increase of its capital from 1.68 million baht to 16.8 million baht. "I believe that apart from marketing strategies, feng shui is behind the company's success. Feng shui tips can attract and create the things you want," she said.

Mrs Thanutporn said she plans to launch computer-based feng shui learning courses in January, starting with the basic to help more people gain knowledge of the fundamentals.

Designing harmony: Simple Feng Shui tips for beginners

Posted in : Feng Shui Tips

(added few months ago!)

In what is becoming a trend that is gaining great following, Feng Shui has become a sought after craft that even designers are forced to study because more and more customers are asking for it. But you do not have to be a deep student of the subject to follow some of its simplest techniques. Feng Shui is an art of living in harmony with the elements and while some of its intricate matters need expert touch, the most basic principles can be implemented with ease. Here are some simple tips for those who wish to get started on the harmonious way of living and decorating.

Designing harmony Simple Feng Shui tips for beginners

Positive Chi is always clutter-free
Chi is the energy flow that is professed by Feng Shui and if you keep the energy flow positive in the space that surrounds you, then your life becomes all the more peaceful. The best way to achieve this positive Chi is to keep your home and office space clutter-free. Cramped up spaces, piled up trash and irregular arrangement not only look bad, but is detrimental to your thought process as well.

#1 Understand your home’s Ba-Gua
Ba-Gua is the map that indicates the flow of Chi in each particular home and how you can alter it. You can always contact an expert to understand  Ba-Gua and how to vary it for positive results. While this is a bit more complicated than other simple steps, it will help you greatly in altering the atmosphere that surrounds you.

#2 Make sure that furniture faces the door
By making sure that all your furniture faces the door, you ensure that there is always a positive flow of the Chi. This seems pretty scientific too, as it offers you better ventilation, fresh air and a view of who exactly is waling in and out. Make sure that the furniture is aligned in a proper fashion with a set pattern.

#3 Use mirrors at the end of hallways and make wide and spacious pathways
Dead ends are not good for a positive flow of the chi. Hence you should put up a mirror at the end of each hallway to create the illusion that it is endless. This makes the room look a lot more spacious and offers better lighting as well. The pathways must be spacious, wide and clean so that there is free and uncluttered movement of the chi.

#4 Create a calm and tranquil environment
Ensuring that the atmosphere around you is peaceful, quiet and serene is a great way of creating positive chi. Instead of making noise use chimes to ensure that gentle and beautiful tunes are created as the wind blows.

#5 Bring in green plants for a refreshing look
Decorate your home with as much green as possible as this will create a positive flow of energy. This gives a great look to your home and adds life to the interiors. You can also add more life by bringing home a fish tank.

#6 Color your home in the right fashion
Use tranquil and neutral colors and soothing textures as much as possible Avoid bright colors that disturb you and create unrest. This is all the more true for places of rest such as bedrooms and sitting patios. Also, avoid colors such as bright red as they promote restlessness.

Feng Shui is no alien art as many would have you believe. Simple, peaceful and clean lifestyle is all it is and if you are following that, then it is most likely that Feng Shui has already made its way into your home. For those who have not tried it yet, give it a shot to notice the difference!

Feng shui expert cleans energy at Fulmore Middle School

Posted in : Others

(added few months ago!)

Dipping a sponge into a bucket of foggy water spiked with Epsom salts, Gloria Obregon wiped down the door frame in the counselor's office at Fulmore Middle School in South Austin on Saturday.

Others swiped desk tops, shooing dust. Obregon, the school's dropout intervention specialist, said the space is a shelter for some students that have difficult family lives. "Now it smells good, there's good energy, and there's happy people in it," she said. The scene had all the trappings of a typical scrub-the-corners deep-clean. Except for Stacy Davenport who took care of the less tangible gunk.

Stepping gingerly around the room with a thin foot-long copper rod, Davenport paused as the limber metal started spinning counter-clockwise. The sudden rotation signaled bad energy. She waited until it righted, bobbing up and down.

Davenport, a feng shui consultant who organized the event, said she thinks about peace during those quiet moments. "As humans, we clean our surfaces," she said. "My gift is to read the unseen aspect of energy and life."

About 12 volunteers, including two of the school's students knocking out required community service hours, tackled the principal's office, cafeteria and classrooms with cleaning supplies and essential oils to clear the campus' bad energy.

Children soak up negativity, Davenport said. And with teacher fears about layoffs, budget cuts and the emotional baggage that students cart into the building every day, she said the school was a natural choice for volunteering her services.

According to Texas Education Agency, 80 percent of the school's students were economically disadvantaged in 2010-11; 50 percent qualified as "at-risk."Saturday was Davenport's second time clearing the energy at Fulmore Middle School. In 2006, she incorporated other elements of feng shui, painting the walls of the administrative office and installing wind chimes in the courtyard.

She attributes a drop in absenteeism and teacher turnover in the wake of her work to the healthier environment she and about 30 volunteers labored to create. But not everyone is convinced, including some Fulmore teachers.

To the skeptics, Davenport compares the energy she clears to a bathtub in an apartment that 20 people have rented. What would happen if you never cleaned it?

This year, volunteers replaced red signs that urged students to stop bullying, name calling, teasing and threats with charts encouraging positive behavior. Davenport tossed a concoction of rice, rum and powder meant to clear the energy around the school's perimeter.

Eventually, she said, she hopes to clean one school in the district every month. "Kids, for me, they're the future," Davenport said. "Keeping a safe and harmonious environment helps them."Walking into a freshly cleaned room, Obregon exhaled. "Immediately you sense it," she said. "It feels lighter. I just feel happier in here."

The Kindness of Feng Shui

Posted in : General

(added few months ago!)

Considering we spend more than 80 percent of our time indoors, it’s vital that our home is supportive and nurturing, that it serves as a haven for self-love and support. When you enter, it’s almost as if your abode is hugging and embracing you. This starts with you being kind to yourself, as your home is merely an outward expression of what’s happening inside.

As a Feng Shui teacher, people often ask me the best first step. Most importantly, I suggest that your home is clutter free. That means letting go of anything that no longer serves or honors you—clothing you haven’t worn in a year, appliances that are broken, objects you don’t need, use, or love. And if someone gave you something that you don’t love, re-gift it or at least pass it on to someone who can truly use it. Find a charity you believe in and exercise a random act of kindness. You will probably receive even more in return. I often drop off carloads of discarded clothes and housewares to a battered women’s shelter and watch the women’s faces light up with joy, which in turn fills me with joy. It seems synchronicity abounds when we look to share.

I recently did a consultation for a single mom of a darling little girl. The springs on their couch had gone out and the cornerstone of their living room was falling apart. The very next day I happened to consult a client in La Jolla who was eager to discard a beautiful white sofa. A friend with a truck offered to deliver it, making one delighted mother. “Wow, Feng Shui works fast!” my client exclaimed with wonder, as she snuggled with her daughter in their gently used couch.

The truth is, it’s gratifying to give to others. You will also find yourself feeling lighter, with more room to think and dream in your living space. Through the process of letting go, I feel blessed to witness transformation on a regular basis. I had one client who lost her husband three years ago and was frozen in time and grief. Her house had become a shrine to her ex-husband, filled with large posters and photos of him everywhere. For six months, we worked on letting go of the pieces that caused her to relive the suffering over and over again. While initially unthinkable, she found tremendous healing in letting go while still honoring the deep love she had for him. In the process, she realized her departed husband would want her to be happy and she deserved to be. She is now happily dating a wonderful man.

Feng Shui offers plenty of opportunities to commit random acts of kindness to your partner, or even your future mate. If you want to attract or enhance a romantic relationship, dress up your home like you’re already in that relationship. Think in twos. Buy night stands and lamps in pairs—one for you and another for your beloved.

As anyone who’s ever been in a relationship knows, love also means giving your partner space. Start with the closet, clearing shelves and hangers for your ideal mate to spread out. Not only is it practical, but it also energetically sends the message that you have room in your life for a relationship. Collect artwork and statues that reflect intimacy. The bedroom is best suited for rest and romance, so remove anything that doesn’t support this, such as that pile of unpaid bills, which can subliminally quash amorous moments.

Also, keep photos of your family, friends, and past lovers out of your bedroom. One of my clients had a beautiful photo of her late grandmother hovering over the bed. Once she moved her grandmother’s watchful eye to another room, her love life blossomed! Want more abundance? Make sure your home reflects that, too. This can be simple and celebratory. Get yourself fresh flowers every week. Make your front entrance warm and welcoming to invite good energy into your home. Pointed objects or plants, such as cactus, by the front door can deter abundance from entering.

Position your bed in the “command position,” with a solid wall behind you and a clear view of the door. The same rule goes for your desk positioning. The power position is one where you can see the door from your desk. Your nervous systems will relax so you can be more focused on what you’re doing. You also invite opportunities into your life by facing them, rather than turning your back on them. You can also enact little acts of kindness to your bodily temple in your very own kitchen. To improve health and well-being, keep your kitchen clean and bright. This includes minimizing electromagnetic fields, or EMFs. Get rid of the microwave and cook your food with good old-fashioned heat. This will help nourish your body more fully with every meal.

Also, allow natural light and fresh air into your home. Besides being beautiful and alive, fresh plants will clean up the air. In Feng Shui, we want to invite all the elements of nature into the house—natural gems, gentle water fountains, fresh flowers, and natural sunlight for the fire element.

As an act of self-kindness, create an altar where that you can meditate, dream, and journal. It can be simple, with photos of saints or people who inspire you, a flower, or a crystal gem. Even if it’s just the corner of a room, create a sacred space that’s private for you. By every choice to re-gift, reuse, or recycle, we are also being kind to Mother Earth, which gives us everything we have. Be grateful for all she provides and inspires. Love our planetary home, your own home, and ultimately, love yourself. There’s nothing random about that.
